Here is a quick summary of some of the more significant changes.
Evaluation & Management
- Code descriptors for office & other outpatient visit codes (99202-99215) were revised to remove the time ranges, making them consistent with other E/M codes
- E/M guidelines were added to split/shared visits
- Guidelines added to clarify how to report E/M services on the same date
- 2 nursing facility codes were revised to change the time for 99306 from 45 minutes to 50 minutes & 99308 from 15 minutes to 20 minutes
Surgery: Musculoskeletal
- 3 new codes for anterior thoracic vertebral body tethering (22836, 22837, 22838)
- New code, 27278, for sacroiliac joint arthrodesis added to report the placement of an intra-articular stabilization device using a minimally invasive technique that does not transfix the joint
Surgery: Respiratory System
- 2 new codes for the destruction of the posterior nasal nerve during a nasal/sinus endoscopy (31242 radiofrequency ablation & 31243 cryoablation)
Surgery: Cardiovascular System
- 8 new codes for the phrenic nerve stimulations system (33276 – 33284, 33287, & 33288)
Surgery: Urinary System
- New code, 52284, which describes cystourethroscopy & mechanical urethral dilation & urethral therapeutic drug delivery using a drug-coated balloon catheter for urethral stricture or stenosis in a male patient with fluoroscopy
Surgery: Female Genital System
- New code, 58580, for transcervical radiofrequency ablation of uterine fibroid(s) that includes ultrasound guidance & monitoring
Surgery: Nervous System
- 3 new codes for skull-mounted cranial pulse generator or receiver procedures (61889, 61891, & 61892)
Surgery: Eye & Ocular Adnexa
- New code, 67516, that describes the injection of a pharmacologic agent in the suprachoroidal space (medication is separately reported)
Radiology
- Code 74710pelvimentry was deleted
- New code, 75580, added to describe FFR
- New code, 76984, added to describe a diagnostic intraoperative thoracic aorta ultrasound
- 3 new codes added for epicardial ultrasound for congenital heart disease (76987, 76988, & 76989)
Pathology & Laboratory
- Codes 81171, 81172, 81243, 81244, 81403, 81404, 81405, 81406, & 81407 were revised to replace “mental retardation” with “intellectual disability”
- 6 new genomic sequence analysis panel codes for solid organ neoplasms were created (81457, 81458, 81459, 81462, 81463, & 81464)
- Code 81517 (MAAA) was added for liver fibrosis and liver-related clinical events within 5 years
- New code, 82166, for chemistry test for AMH
- 3 new immunology codes were created 86041,86042, & 86043
- New code, 86366, added for the test for MuSK antibodies
- New code, 87523, for hepatitis D test
- New code, 87593, for orthopoxvirus
- Many new PLA codes as well
Medicine
- New codes for RSV vaccine doses (90380 & 90381)
- New COVID vaccination code, 90480
- 3 new Pfizer product codes 91318, 91319, & 91320 (they are based on age)
- 2 new Moderna vaccine product codes 91321 & 91322
- New codes went into effect Sept 11,2023
- All previously approved COVID-19 vaccine supply and administration codes will be deleted from the CPT code set effective Nov.1, 2023
- 4 new codes created for phrenic nerve stimulation system 93150, 93151, 93152, & 93153
- 5 new add-on codes were created for venography for congenital heart defects (93584, 93585, 93586, 93587, & 93588)
- 3 new codes were created for caregiver training (97550-97552)
