In an unprecedented move, CMS has proposed in the 2022 Outpatient Prospective Payment System Rule to put back on the inpatient only list all 298 services that they had previously removed from the IPO list in CY 2021.
CMS has put a halt to its three year-plan to completely eliminate the inpatient only list. Their reasoning is to protect the safety of Medicare beneficiaries and to take a more cautionary approach to removing services from the list.
At this time it is unclear as to how physicians and hospitals should proceed with this new information.
